What we do

We’re a community interest company, providing social and therapeutic horticulture and horticulture training for vulnerable adults.
You’ll find us in Thompson Park, Southwick on a former council maintenance site, which we’ve transformed into a growing and training facility open to everyone.
Thanks for your support.

Community Activities

We work closely with the community, Friends of Thompson Park, Sunderland Council and many other community groups. We carry out tasks in Thompson Park, Southwick and Fulwell. The team have carried out some fantastic work in many areas of Sunderland including Sea Road Fulwell and Bamford Street City Centre.

Therapeutic
Horticulture

We provide a relaxed and friendly environment for horticultural work in our nursery, vegetable gardens, and landscaped areas.
There are a variety of tasks throughout the day. We also offer retail work experience in our small garden centre where individuals can help deliver our high standard of customer service.

 Garden Centre
& Nursery

The team produce a huge amount of summer and spring bedding hanging baskets and perennials for retail and wholesale.
You will find plants at The Palace Green World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral, Lumley Castle, and Sherburn Village, which was awarded a Gold Award Britain in Bloom.

Interest
Groups

We offer a variety of interest  groups, which includes fruit and vegetable growing, community gardening, beekeeping and beehive management, local history and heritage, health and wellbeing, and healthy eating. The Thompson Park Heritage group meets twice per month at the Park Café to share their research.
Founded in 2017, Sunderland Home Grown CIC has been on a journey of growth and transformation. Thanks to the generous support from Power to Change, we have successfully transformed a former council maintenance site into a thriving working nursery facility and garden centre, now open for the public to enjoy.

Our primary focus at the nursery is to create meaningful opportunities for young people and adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges. We firmly believe in the power of horticulture to bring about positive change and empowerment. Through our training and employment programs, we aim to equip individuals with the skills they need to flourish personally and professionally.

We are also proud to announce our recent success in securing a Youth Investment Grant. This grant will enable us to expand our reach and impact by introducing specialised programs tailored to the needs of young people in our community. With this new initiative, we are dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation, promoting their personal growth and well-being through the wonders of horticulture.
